Institutions collaborate for 3-day mega moot on medical education

LAHORE: The top medical institutions, both in public and private sector, are collaborating to organise a three-day mega moot on medical education starting from today. The Association for Excellence in Medical Education (AEME) Conference 2014, presented by Isra University, Islamabad, will be held at the University of Health and Sciences (UHS) to exchange research work, viewpoints and experiences in professional health education.
Addressing to a press conference at UHS on Thursday, vice chancellor Maj Gen (r) Prof Muhammad Aslam said that it would be a major event and would be held to highlight the various aspects of medical education, its importance and ways to promote it in Pakistan. It would fill the vacuum that exists in the field of teaching that if persists may hit the profession badly.
He added that the conference is being organised in public-private partnership and major teaching and medical institutions are collaborating for the event including King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC), Fatima Jinnah Medical College, (FJMC), College of Physician and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP), Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), CMH Lahore Medical College and Lahore Medical and Dental College, Lahore. Professor Aslam also said that the conference would be attended by more than 600 health professionals, including some of the renowned experts in medical education. He said, “The conference is a credit to Lahore, as it presents collaboration at its best between medical education and the health sectors.” UHS vice chancellor also said that it would allow many professionals to refresh their skills they already have and also provide the opportunity for others to learn new ones.
The topics to be discussed at the conference include, continued professional development, competency-based curriculum, performance-based assessments, medical writing and research, teaching and learning, leadership and capacity building and the globalisation of healthcare and technology. Isra University Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Umar Ali Khan said that there would be 20 workshops, oral and poster presentations, keynote speeches, mini-symposia, short courses and plenary discussions during the conference.
While the main event would be held at UHS, and the pre-conference workshops would be organized at KEMU and other medical colleges. Dr Umar said that some of the international authorities in medical education had reached Lahore to facilitate the conference including Professor Stefan Lindgren who teaches at Lund University Sweden, Dr John (Jack), the current president of the World Federation for Medical Education; R. Boulet, Assistant vice president for Research and Evaluation of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), Prof Ara Tekian, associate dean at University of Illinois, USA; Dr John J. Norcni, President and chief executive officer at Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), USA, Dr Janet Grant, professor of education in medicine from Open University, UK, and Ian Willis, head of the Educational Development Division, University of Liverpool, UK.
UHS Pro-VC Prof Junaid Sarfaraz Khan said that the conference would promote international excellence in education in the healthcare professions across the continuum of undergraduate and the postgraduate. He said that education must be an important component in the strategies of governmental and other healthcare organizations.
