Those opposing girls' education represent ignorance: PUC chief
ISLAMABAD: No other religion or society has given women the honour and status that have been given to them by Islam. Those who oppose girls' education represent ignorance, not Islam.
These views were expressed by Pakistan Ulema Council [PUC] Central Chairman Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi during his meeting with female students of different universities at the PUC office.
He said that the first person to testify the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a woman, and the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) give women the same right to study as men.
He said that girls were buried alive before the advent of Islam. "But today, our society has become worse than the period of ignorance. Not only is the birth of female child lamented here, innocent young girls are also ill treated. The entire society has maintained a criminal silence over this matter." He further said that the women of today should rectify society in the light of the Islamic teachings and Shariah. Responding to a question, Tahir Ashrafi said that all segments of society should come forward to put an end to derogatory traditions such as dowry that are depriving women of their right to live.
