New security strategy to be visible in Islamabad by April 15: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that the new operational security strategy should be visible on the streets of Islamabad by April 15.
He said this while chairing a high-level meeting attended by acting NADRA Chairman, DG FIA, Commandant Rangers and top Islamabad police officials here on Sunday. Chaudhry Nisar said the government would provide necessary funds to start a system of joint patrolling by Rangers and police. He said that Rangers have been given this extra responsibility to make Islamabad a safer city ensuring security of life and property of every resident and giving extra confidence to the people of Islamabad.
The minister gave directions for immediate purchase of patrolling vehicles along with the recruitment of trained retired army personnel in police. He also directed police to train some of its personnel on the pattern of Elite Police Force. The minister asked FIA to improve its working and gave directions that strict action should be taken against those officials who have been found guilty of involvement in facilitating human trafficking including their removal from service.
He said even the slightest irregularity should be met with the full disciplinary response. He said those officials who are mixed up with criminals should be identified and arrested. While reviewing the performance of NADRA the minister approved convening of board of directors meeting during the next week. The minister was informed that all staff and vehicles deputed with unauthorized personnel have been withdrawn, while NADRA has deployed 12 Mobile Registration Vans for the registration of victims of Thar.
In the light of Minister’s directives regarding streamlining NADRA’s affairs, the Authority’s net profit increased to Rs 475 million in the month of February as opposed to just Rs 18 million in November last year. NADRA had 36 seats of Director General, which have now been brought down to 24. Regarding postings abroad a fresh policy has been formulated for selection of officials purely on merit, while orders for the repatriation of 13 officials who have completed their tenure have been issued. Household survey of the federal capital would be completed by May 1, 2014.
The Minister said that he had surrendered his right to appoint new Chairman NADRA by referring the appointment matter to the federal commission constituted in the light of Supreme Court’s July 2013 decision.
This step has been taken to ensure transparency and merit in the appointment of the new Chairman without any political influence or pressure, he said. He emphasised that advertisements for this purpose would be given in both national and international media to attract best talent for this key slot.
