SC orders Local Bodies polls till November 15
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has ordered the centre and provinces to complete legislation pertaining to Local Bodies (LB) elections in five months and conduct the polls till November 15.
The order states that the power to hold LB polls and delimitations lies only with the Election Commission of Pakistan and not with the provincial governments.
A three-member bench headed by chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani issued the verdict in the case pertaining to LB polls in Sindh and Punjab here on Wednesday.
Earlier, the Punjab government had sought four-month time from the Supreme Court (SC) for holding local bodies election in the province.
Advocate General (AG) Punjab Mustafa Ramday submitted a report pertaining to the time-frame for the LB polls in the apex court. As per the report, the elections will be completed in 10 stages.
It would take four months to prepare legal draft of the bill and delimitations of constituencies for LB elections, the AG Punjab prayed in the court.
