Govt committed to protect women against exploitation, marginalisation: Mamnoon

ISLAMABAD - President Mamnoon Hussain has said that the government is committed to protect the women from all sorts of exploitation and marginalisation, besides providing them with equal opportunities and an environment enabling them to grow and excel in every sphere of life according to their capabilities.
The president, in a message on the occasion of 104th anniversary of the International Women Day being observed on March 8, said theme of the day “Make it Happen” was calling upon the world community to translate its visions into actions. He said that the observance of the day served to raise greater awareness about the issues of the women and highlight their critical role in the sustained developmental process. “This day also provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the achievements of women and to highlight their needs and concerns at the national, regional and global level,” he remarked. The president said that the untiring struggle of the women for their rights had led to visible prominence of women in every walk of life. “I congratulate the women across Pakistan on this occasion and wish them brighter future and greater prospects in the days to come,” he said.
He said that the internal and regional instruments, including the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) were being implemented in their true letter and spirit. He said that a number of steps, including pro-women legislation and efforts aimed at socio-economic betterment and empowerment of the women, clearly reflected the commitment of the state towards the cause of the women and assuring their participation in every sphere of life. The president said that the protection of women’s rights required a strong partnership of the government and all relevant stakeholders. “I, therefore, call upon the civil society, NGOs, volunteers, philanthropists, international development partners, media, corporate sector and particularly the women themselves to come forward and complement government’s efforts towards this noble cause,” he remarked.
He said, “Toady we are reaffirming our pledge towards promotion and protection of their rights in the country.” He also appreciated UN agencies, non-governmental organisations and media for their endeavors in supplementing the government’s efforts to create conducive environment for the women in Pakistan. President Mamnoon hoped that they would continue pursuing this important mission with the same zeal and spirit and expressed confidence that “with our continued focus on the issues of the women we would be able to provide them a better and brighter future.”
