Army Chief reiterates support for Afghan peace

KABUL: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif held a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during brief stopover in Kabul on Wednesday and reiterated his support to the Afghan leadership for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Raheel had a brief stopover in Kabul while returning from a day-long official visit to Tajikistan.

The ISPR says, Gen Raheel Sharif held meeting with the Afghan President at the Presidential Palace.

The army chief reiterated his whole hearted support to the Afghan leadership for peace and stability in Afghanistan, said the statement, adding that the Afghan leadership acknowledged Pakistan Army’s efforts and achievements in the war against terrorism and its role for bringing regional peace and stability.

General Raheel also attended a Change of Command ceremony of the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan.

He also held separate meetings with the US military leadership including the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, Commander of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) General Lloyd J Austin, and Commander of the NATO Resolute Support Mission US Army Gen. John W. Nicholson, Jr.

During the meeting, the top military leaders discussed matters relating to regional security, border management operations, and operational coordination of the ongoing military operation in North Waziristan's Shawal valley to check terrorists trying to flee across border into Afghanistan.

The meetings reviewed and expressed their optimism for positive outcome of the reconciliation being pursued through the ongoing Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) framework, said the ISPR press statement.
