KP govt asked not to give electricity profit, tobacco cess to universities

PESHAWAR – A high-level meeting regarding tobacco cess and hydel net profit held here in the conference room of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Secretariat with Special Assistant Abdul Karim Khan in the chair.
Member Provincial Assembly Shiraz Khan, Raja Faisal Zaman, Gohar Nawaz Khan, Babar Saleem and Ayesha Naeeem also attended the meeting. The meeting after detailed discussion decided to invite all concerned members of the assembly for the next meeting.
The meeting also decided that funds should also be distributed in consultations with the concerned members of the assembly and the adoption of a unified formula in this regard. The members of the provincial assembly were of the view that the funds of net profit on hydel power generation and tobacco cess should not be given to universities.
Committee’s Acting Chairman Abdul Karim Khan said that constitution has clear sections regarding net profit on electricity and most deserving for the funds are the people affected due to the construction of the dam. He expressed surprise over the matter that out of the 21 public sector universities of the province, 19 were being funded by the government and only two universities of Swabi are deprived of this right.
