Women protection bill neither unconstitutional nor un-islamic: Ashrafi

FAISALABAD: Pakistan Ulema Council s Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi on Tuesday said Women Protection Act (WPA) is neither unconstitutional nor against Islam.

He said religious scholarse had some reservations on some clauses of the bill which should be addressed by the government.

Addressing a press conference at Jamia Qasmia, he said Ulema and Muftis have given their point of view on the bill which would be presented before Ulema committee and government representatives in Lahore on March 24.

He said Islam gives rights to women and prohibits every kind of violence against them, adding that no party group or individual had the right to violence against women.

He urged the Punjab government to take religious scholars into confidence on the WPA.
