‘Pakistan’s nuclear program is a cause of stability in South Asia’
WASHINGTON: Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry on Thursday said Pakistan’s nuclear program is a cause of stability in South Asia.
Speaking at Pakistan’s Embassy in Washington ahead of Nuclear Summit, he said basic purpose of country’s nuclear program is to prevent war in the region. “Pakistan’s nuclear program is safe and the world recognizes it,” he said.
He said the international community has also been praising Pakistan for the steps it has taken to ensure nuclear safety.
“Pakistan has done hard work for nuclear safety during the last few years,” he said. The secretary said Pakistan is participating in activities that are part of Nuclear Summit and this year a delegation led by Prime Minister’s advisor Tariq Fatimi would attend the moot.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was to attend the nuclear summit in the United States but cancelled his visit due to internal situation of the country that emerged after a deadly suicide attack in Lahore and protests in Islamabad.
Chaudhry said India was consistently increasing its nuclear stockpile.
Responding to questions regarding arrest of Indian spy, he said the RAW officer entered Pakistan through Iran illegally and Islamabad has apprised the key world powers about the issue.
