KARACHI: The government of Sindh has opposed decision of the federal government to initiate 97 natural gas expansion schemes worth Rs37 billion.
These Rs37 billion worth of projects were approved on the recommendation of members of parliament, most of whom belong to PML-N.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has written a letter to the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif highlighting the stance of the Sindh government on the schemes. In his letter, chief minister said the initiative is a violation of Article 158, as the federation has imposed a ban on the natural gas projects.
Murad further said that Punjab produces only 3 percent of the total gas production while it consumes 42 percent.
According to Article 158 of the Constitution, titled as ‘priority of requirements of natural gas’, the province in which a well-head of natural gas is situated shall have precedence over other parts of Pakistan in meeting the requirements from the well-head.
