Meeting may lead to speculations: Khursheed

ISLAMABAD: The one-on-one meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday set tongues wagging, with political and legal circles chipping in with their comments.

Commenting on the meeting, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said ‘although the meeting was not an unusual one, the timing was not suitable, as cases against ministers in Abbasi’s cabinet and Sharif family were underway in higher courts as well as the accountability courts.” Speaking at Geo News programme Capital Talk, he said: "Today’s meeting will add to speculations."

Meanwhile, the legal fraternity gave a mixed reaction to the meeting between the prime minister and chief justice. “We met the chief justice in the evening at around 5pm, but we did not know about it (the meeting),” Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Kamran Murtaza told The News. “This is unprecedented,” he added.

“It seems strange and I can’t believe it,” said former president Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Barrister Ali Zafar. Muhammad Ikram Chaudhry, senior Supreme Court lawyer, however, termed the meeting against the spirit of Constitution. Shah Khawar, former high court judge, said this may be a courtesy call on the part of prime minister. He said the prime minister’s visit to the Supreme Court and his meeting with the chief justice was a kind of respect to the judiciary and the chief justice as well.

“There is no bar on high dignitaries to meet the chief justice of Pakistan,” Khawar told The News, adding that although the CJP or any judge of the superior or lower judiciary could not meet people, high dignitaries could.
