Faisalabad police manhandle woman

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: A woman was manhandled in the presence of high-ranking officials at the Faisalabad Civil Lines Police Station, a video broadcast on Sunday by private TV channels revealed.

One of the channels reported that the woman in question, Abida Hamid, was tortured when she came to the police station to register an FIR against a policeman.

The footage captured with a cell phone camera showed a female constable dragging Abida on the floor, while Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tasleem Sabir, female Station House Officer (SHO) Zahida Parvin, Civil Lines Police Station SHO Nasrullah Niazi and other police officers were seen laughing.

According to the channel, Abida alleged that Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah had paid no attention to her case and ‘gave her no justice’ when she approached him many times in the past.

However, Sanaullah said that appropriate legal action would be taken after an inquiry into the incident. “There is no room for lack of discipline in the Punjab Police and such officers would not remain in the police force,” he said.

Separately, the Faisalabad city police officer (CPO), after the broadcast of the footage of alleged torture on private TV channels, suspended Inspector Nasrullah Niazi and female SHO Zahida Parveen, who were present at the time of the incident.

Also, the CPO has constituted a special team consisting of Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Sarfraz Ahmad Falki, Superintendent of Police (Investigations) Muhammad Hanif and Kotwali DSP Asadur Rehman, which will probe the incident and submit its report to the Punjab inspector general of police.
