Energy conference to be convened this month: CM

 

* Shahbaz chairs meeting to review provision of education through TV, construction of expressway in Lahore

LAHORE: An energy conference will be convened this month to find ways for tackling the energy crisis and ending load shedding, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday.

The chief minister made these remarks while talking to the media at the Allama Iqbal International Airport after returning from a private visit to the UK. Shahbaz urged the federal government to take all possible measures for resolving the energy crisis as soon as possible.

Later on, the Punjab chief minister chaired a meeting to review the provision of education through television at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. Shahbaz said the Punjab government was making sincere and coordinated efforts for the promotion of education in the province, as the provision of education would eliminate illiteracy from society. He apprised the participants of the meeting that the steps taken by the Punjab government had started yielding positive results. The Punjab chief minister said that formal education should also be promoted so that the youth of the province could be equipped with the latest trends.

Shahbaz said the Punjab government had established more than 4,000 information technology (IT) laboratories in the province and had taken solid measures for the provision of basic facilities in the educational institutions of Punjab. He told the participants of the meeting that the Punjab government would also ensure the attendance of teachers in educational institutions and would introduce modern syllabi in all government schools of the province.

Also on Sunday, the Punjab chief minister chaired a meeting to review the construction of an expressway in Lahore at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. Shahbaz said the Punjab government had decided to construct an expressway from the Babu-Sabu Interchange to the Niazi Chowk and planning in this regard would start soon. He said the renovation of the Kalma and Bhatta chowks would also be started soon, which would facilitate commuters.

US Lahore Consul General Carmella Conroy called on the Punjab chief minister at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. Bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting. Senior US diplomat Bryan D Hunt was also present on the occasion.
