Pakistan likely to exceed $18bn export revenue target
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan exported goods worth $14.1 billion during the first nine months of the current financial year and it is expected that the target of over $18 billion export revenue will be achieved, the Senate was informed on Tuesday.
During question hour, Leader of the House Nayyar Hussain Bokhari said the government is working on a new Export Development Strategy with particular focus on value addition to further boost exports. He said efforts were also underway to explore new markets for this purpose. Bokhari said special emphasis is being laid on enhancing exports to China, Russia, the Central Asian States, Japan, Korea, Australia, Africa, South America and Eastern Europe.
Bokhari told the Upper House that the export target for the fiscal year 2009-2010 is likely to be achieved as the country had comfortably exceeded the export target set for the first three quarters of the current fiscal year.
He said Pakistan’s textile exports had increased significantly while leather, surgical instruments and cement exports had declined during the current fiscal year due to various reasons that included the international financial crunch and the domestic power crisis.
Bokhari informed the House that ‘focused trade fair participation’ was an important promotional tool for the marketing of products in the world and the government had organised for the Pakistan to participate in 129 fairs and exhibitions across the globe during March 2008 to January 2010.
