BoP scam accused could be released on May 14: US


ISLAMABAD: The US embassy in Pakistan has also warned that Hamesh Khan would possibly be released on May 14 by the American authorities if Islamabad fails in time to convey to Washington its assurance for fair handling of the former president of the Bank of Punjab after his extradition to Pakistan.

US embassy spokesman Richard W Snelsire told The News here on Saturday that by May 13, Washington must receive Islamabad’s assurance in order to secure the extradition of Hamesh Khan.

On May 14, he said the Hamesh extradition case may go back to the court, which if told that the Government of Pakistan has been unable to offer required assurances would lead to the possible release of banker.

He said the former president BoP, wanted in Pakistan for his alleged involvement in Rs 9 billion BoP-Haris Steel corruption case, is presently in the custody of the US authorities.

The US embassy spokesman confirmed that under the US law there is a time limit set for extradition of an accused following a court order. In case of the lapse of the time limit, he said, the accused is released.
