Baroness Warsi named Britain’s first female Muslim minister
LAHORE: Sayeeda Warsi has been announced as the Conservative Party’s chairwoman, becoming the first Muslim woman to be a part of the British cabinet, a private TV channel reported on Wednesday.
Baroness Warsi, born in Yorkshire and a trained solicitor, has replaced Eric Pickles, who became the communities secretary. She served as the shadow minister for community cohesion in 2007, and as vice chairperson of the Conservative Party from 2005 to 2007.
Warsi told a TV channel, being a Pakistani it was pleasing to be the Conservative Party chairwoman, adding she would visit Pakistan soon. In 2005, Warsi was criticised by a gay rights charity, Stonewall, after she said children in schools were being “propositioned” for gay relationships. During her campaign, she had said, “Labour Party reduced the age of consent for homosexuality from 18 to 16, allowing schoolchildren to be propositioned for homosexual relationships.” daily times monitor
