Shujaat seeks Chinese assistance to avert lake crisis
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Wednesday called upon the federal government to immediately contact China to seek technical assistance so as to avert a possible human disaster in Hunza caused by the Attaabad Lake.
Talking to reporters at Parliament House, the PML-Q leader expressed grave concern over the threatening situation in Hunza, saying that 36 villages were facing a threat to their existence while half a dozen had already perished.
“I am afraid that human life and the property of thousands of people are at stake. Moreover, the artificial lake is turning into a water bomb which may also threaten the Tarbela Dam,” he added.
The PML-Q leader said he had talked to his party’s Additional General Secretary Bashir Ahmad Khan, who is the leader of the Opposition in Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and he was very concerned about the catastrophic situation emerging in the area.
Hussain also directed the PML-Q leaders and workers to actively take part in the rescue and relief efforts being undertaken for the affected people of Hunza.
PML-Q Secretary Finance Imtiaz Ranjha said his party had formed a two-member committee for looking into the affairs of Attaabad Lake. app
