ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the law and the interior secretaries and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman to appear in court today (Friday) and brief a five-member bench on the implementation of the NRO verdict.
The five-member larger bench of Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafferi and Justice Tariq Parvez was hearing a suo motu notice taken against the lack of implementation of the NRO verdict.
The bench expressed dismay over the absence of Law Secretary Justice (r) Muhammad Aquil Mirza – whose resignation was accepted by the government after the court proceedings on Thursday – from the court.
The court also ordered the interior secretary and the NAB chairman to appear in court with relevant documents.
At the last hearing, the law secretary told the SC that there was no need for correspondence with the Swiss authorities, as graft cases against Asif Ali Zardari “cannot be reopened”.
During the hearing on Friday, Attorney General Justice (r) Maulvi Anwarul Haq – replying to a question by Justice Nasirul Mulk – said Aqil Mirza’s resignation was yet to be accepted. The court then said Aqil Mirza should have appeared in court if his resignation was yet to accepted.
Additional Attorney General KK Agha filed a 90-page report – compiled by a fact-finding committee – on Ahmed Riaz Shaikh’s promotion from the office of deputy director to FIA (Economic Crimes Wing) additional director general. The court later adjoined the hearing until May 14.
