PIA officials spent Rs 142.162 million on travel, Senate told

ISLAMABAD: The Defence Ministry informed the Senate on Tuesday that Rs 142.162 million were spent during the last three years on sending Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) officials abroad for various purposes.

In a written reply to the Senate, the ministry said Rs 36.262 million were spent on 373 officials during 2007, Rs 31.555 million on 387 officials during 2008 and Rs 74.352 million were spent during 2009.

To a question, the ministry said presently there were four private airlines operating in the country, while another, M/s Air Indus, had applied for a licence.

It added that the Cantonment Board Rawalpindi was charging a 15 percent tax on the annual rental value of properties and the tax had not been raised since 1999.

The Ministry of Postal Service informed the House that 73 new post offices were established during the last two years across the country.

Of them, 32 were established in Punjab, 13 each in Sindh and Balochistan, seven in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, seven in the federal capital and AJK and one in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Senate was also informed that 236 private educational institutions were operating in residential areas of Islamabad.

The Ministry of Communication informed the Senate that the total cost of the Mansehra-Naran-Jhalkhand Road was Rs 4487 million and an amount of Rs 5 million had been allocated in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2009-10. It said Rs 158.09 million had been spent on the project so far.

The ministry said the estimated cost for the construction of Jhalkhan-Chilas Road was 2,519 million and Rs 421.28 million had been spent on the project between July 2009 and April 2010.
