Petition seeks disqualification of Senate chairman

Staff Report

LAHORE: A British national of Pakistani origin, Mahfooz Ahmad, on Wednesday moved a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking disqualification of Senate Chairman Farooq Naik for not proceeding on a reference sent by the petitioner against the Senate membership of Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

The petitioner’s lawyer Mujeebullah stated that the petitioner had filed a reference in the Senate challenging Malik’s eligibility at the time of his election.

He said the petitioner had argued that Malik had been removed from official service and was not eligible to become a member of the Senate. The lawyer said the Senate chairman had not taken any action on the reference so far and subsequently Malik was elected to the Senate.
