Karakoram Highway closed over flood fears

ISLAMABAD: Travelling through the Karakoram Highway was suspended on Wednesday due to fears of a flood emerging out of Hunza’s Attaabad lake. Gojal, Shishkat, Gulmit and other areas of Upper Hunza have already been submerged in the water, while water inflow in the lake is 2,600 cusecs and outflow 200 cusecs. Transporters have also suspended the transportation of goods to Gilgit-Baltistan from the Karakoram Highway. Water from the Attaabad lake is likely to enter spillways in two days as the water level has reached above 350 feet. On the other hand, helicopter service for the people affected is underway, according to a news channel. The Pakistan Army is continuing relief efforts in the affected areas of Hunza and aviation helicopters are continuously transporting the victims to safer grounds. Meanwhile, a team of doctors left for Hunza by a helicopter to provide medical facilities to the victims. app
