Pakistan key partner in global peace, says UK

LONDON: A senior British diplomat on Wednesday underlined the immense importance the UK attaches to its relations with Pakistan, and said it will continue the process of building a strong long-term partnership between the two countries. Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Britain’s special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, was speaking at the 57th annual dinner of the Pakistan Society, held at the historic Lincoln’s Inn from where Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah did his bar-at-law. Sir Sherard was the guest of honour at the event. The career diplomat, appointed to his current post in 2009, said, “Pakistan was a proud Muslim democracy, which is working for the region’s security and stability”. He spoke of the deep relations between the UK and Pakistan and said both countries share “many values”. Sir Sherard reminisced about his days at the Oxford University and recalled debating with Benazir Bhutto. app
