Dr Aafia case hearing adjourned until June 4

Staff Report

LAHORE: Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday postponed until June 4 the hearing of a petition seeking directions from the federal government to help Dr Aafia Siddiqui, currently languishing in a US jail.

The judge has asked that a responsible officer of the Foreign Office appear at the next hearing.

Barrister Iqbal Jafree had moved the petition in which he submitted that Dr Aafia and her three children were kidnapped from Karachi.

Had she been arrested in Afghanistan, both the US and Afghan governments would have informed the Pakistan Embassy in Kabul, he said.

He said the Pakistan government had also failed to raise the matter of Dr Aafia before the International Court of Justice.
