Pak team due in India for water talks
NEW DELHI: A Pakistani delegation led by Indus Water Commissioner Syed Jamaat Ali Shah is arriving in New Delhi today (Saturday) to attend the annual meeting of the Indo-Pak Permanent Indus Commission (PIC).
The meeting is designed to exchange information and data on floods and river flow in western rivers by June 1 each year.
During the monsoon season, India sets up a round-the-clock control room in the Indus Wing of Ministry of Water Resources to share water flow data with Pakistan. A Water Ministry official said the data was being exchanged as part of goodwill gestures and on humanitarian grounds.
“No costs are being charged to Pakistan for the collection and transmission of the data,” he said.
During the meeting, Pakistan is set to take up with India the issue of two more hydel power units being constructed in Indian-held Kashmir. “Pakistan has objections to the construction of the Uri-II and Chutak hydel power projects,” an official told Daily Times. iftikhar gilani
