President, PM, COAS discuss US operation
Trio vows to uphold national interest
* Gilani to take nation, parliament into confidence on Abbottabad operation by US forces while looking forward to a full debate on the matter in House
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Saturday held extensive consultations on the situation arising from the Abbottabad operation.
Prime Minister Gilani emphasised that the sole criteria for formulating the government’s stance is safeguarding Pakistan’s supreme national interest, by all means, by all state institutions, in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan, who above all value their dignity and honour.
Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar also attended the meeting that reviewed the country’s situation in the perspective of national security and foreign policy. The meeting took cognisance of the present situation in its totality.
It was decided that the prime minister would take the nation into confidence on Monday (tomorrow) in the face of mounting criticism over the killing of Osama Bin Laden on Pakistani soil by US special forces violating the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The prime minister will take the nation into confidence through the platform of parliament while looking forward to a full debate on the matter on the floor of the House. The prime minister also briefed
