Malik cleared in two corruption references

By Khalid Bin Majeed

RAWALPINDI: An accountability court acquitted Interior Minister Rehman Malik in two cases of corruption on Saturday.

Judge Chaudhry Abdul Haq issued a verdict, acquitting the interior minister in two cases due to lack of witnesses.

Malik was accused of receiving hefty gratification in the purchase of official vehicles when he was posted as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) additional director general (ADG).

The second reference alleged that Malik barged into the house of Hashim Raza in Lahore and took away cash, gold and other valuables.

Malik was enjoying a presidential pardon in corruption cases against him. He was given three years sentence in each case in absentia.

The court acquitted the interior minister and his alleged accomplice, Sajjad Haider, from the cases initiated in 1997 when Rehman Malik was FIA ADG.
