Operation a big blow to sovereignty: Nawaz

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has termed the unilateral operation of May 2 by US special forces as violating the country’s territorial integrity, a major attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty and independence. “I think it is a big blow to Pakistan’s sovereignty, independence and self-respect,” said the former premier while talking to reporters in Lahore. “Pakistan is in a grave crisis and is surrounded by big danger” and the national political leadership needed to steer the country out of it, he said, and warned “If action is not taken to stop outside operations, the country will have to bear the brunt of such attacks.” In his media talk, the PML-N chief neither reiterated the demand for resignation of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, as was made by his party member, leader of opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, over the Abbottabad incident nor did he mention the much-talked about intelligence breakdown. But he, however, announced that he “has called an urgent meeting of top leadership of the PML-N in Islamabad” on Tuesday to review the situation arising out of the covert US operation.

Nevertheless, the PML-N chief did mention the incident of CIA contractor Raymond Davis, who shot dead two civilians in a busy area of Lahore in January, and expressed the need for evolving a strategy to avert similar incidents in the future. staff report
