Kayani for consensus approach against terror

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said on Monday that he has requested Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani that strength of democracy must be put into effect to develop a consensus on important security issues, including the war on terror. Kayani said that the Abbottabad incident had been in a sharp public focus and incomplete information and lack of technical details had resulted in speculations and misreporting. The people needed to be taken into confidence through their honourable elected representatives, he said, adding that he had requested the honourable prime minister to consider convening of a joint session of parliament for a briefing on security issues related to the Abbottabad incident. The COAS observed that public dismay and despondency had also been aggravated due to insufficient formal response. According to a press release issued by the ISPR, Kayani, in his address to the Rawalpindi, Kharian and Sialkot garrisons, said that articulation of a national response through parliament under the present circumstances was the most effective way to let the world know the achievements of Pakistan against al Qaeda and its terror affiliates, adding that this would not have been possible without the active support and invaluable sacrifices of the people of Pakistan. The COAS also held a very frank question-answer session with the participants. app
