Nawaz calls for reviewing relations with US

* PML-N chief demands constitution of an independent commission, consisting equal number of members both from govt and opposition, to investigate the incident

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday pressed the federal government for reviewing the Pakistan-United States relations, saying the nation wanted replies to the questions that arose after the unilateral US operation in Abbottabad, a private television channel reported.

The former premier, while presiding over a joint meeting of the PML-N’s Central Executive Committee and Parliamentary Committee at the Punjab House, also demanded the government to constitute an independent commission, comprising equal number of members from both the government and opposition sides, for a free investigation into the Abbottabad incident, said the channel. The PML-N chief opined that well-reputed people from the judiciary and civil society could also be included in the commission.

According to sources, the hurriedly called meeting had to review, among other issues, the situation arising out of the covert US operation in Abbottabad that led to the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on May 2. But, as per PML-N sources, no decision could be made for adopting a clear-cut stance on the issue. The PML-N, said the sources, would not disappoint the nation, adding that the PML-N chief would announce the party’s policy on the Abbottabad incident and the upcoming budget in a news conference at the conclusion of the meeting at 4pm on Wednesday (today). Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Raja Zafarul Haq, Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Saad Rafique and other party members attended the meeting.
