Constitution allows president to take part in politics: Babar

ISLAMABAD: Former law minister Babar Awan said on Thursday that under the constitution, president of the country is allowed to take part in national politics by virtue of being part of parliament. “According to Article 50 of the constitution, president can take part in politics, and as per Clause 2 of the same article, parliament consists of three components, National Assembly, Senate and President,” said Babar while commenting on a Lahore High Court verdict that ordered President Zardari to quit one of his two offices – presidency or co-chairmanship of the Pakistan People’s Party. Babar was of the view that “before restricting president from taking part in politics, we have to bring out the state’s head from the definition of citizenship, as constitutionally, every citizen has the right to become member of any political party”. “If the premier, chief ministers of the provinces and its electoral college meet president, would it be called politics,” he questioned. app
