PML-N proposes names for independent commission
By Tanveer Ahmed
ISLAMABAD: Taking the lead, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has announced to initiate a consultative process for the constitution of an independent commission to probe into Abbottabad operation, proposed through a consensus parliamentary resolution, from Wednesday (today).
“It is the prime minister who should have started this process as he is the biggest stakeholder. However, after the lapse of three days and no sign of consultations from the government side, PML-N has decided to forward a letter to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani by floating few names for this commission,” Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, opposition leader in the National Assembly, stated at a press conference on Tuesday.
Nisar said that whosoever’s names had been suggested enjoyed integrity and credibility, and suggested that no person affiliated with the PML-N or PPP should be part of this commission.
The names disclosed by the opposition leader include Justice (r) Shafiaur Rahman, Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid, Justice (r) Fakhuruddin G Ibrahim, Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir, Pakhtunkhwa Awami Milli Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Majeed Nizami. “The commission should be mandated to come up with its findings within 30 days,” Nisar said. Nisar also sought explanation from the government and military as to what terms of engagement had been finalised with the US regarding the joint operation against any high-value target in the future. “The fresh terms of engagements should be made public as what has transpired recently in meetings with the US Senator John Kerry,” Nisar demanded.
