DG NAB Punjab stopped from working

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday stopped Rana Zahid Mahmood from working as Director General of the National Accountability Bureau, Punjab, after announcing that his tenure has expired.

A division bench, comprising Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq and Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan, was hearing a writ petition - filed by Shah Faisal Qureshi - to restrain Rana Zahid Mahmood from working as the NAB DG after expiry of his contract of employment.

The petitioner said it was illegal for him to hold the office as his contract had expired on April 21. He said all decisions taken by him after April 21 would be illegal and would have no effect. The petitioner said Zahid was employed on one-year contract on April 21 as NAB director general and the period had expired on April 21.

Federal government informed the court that after expiry of the contract he cannot continue working as NAB Punjab chief. Rana refused to accept the government's reply and pointed out that the law ministry has nothing to do with his appointment.

The court then issued the verdict restraining Rana Mahmood from working. Later, the petitioner and son of Rana exchanged hot words outside the courtroom.
