Blaming army, ISI will be to please enemies: MQM chief

* Altaf says more than 80 percent of budget is spent on defence

By Masroor Afzal Pasha

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has said that more than 80 percent of the budget was spent on defence and its allied institutions, so if action was not taken against the responsible elements then the country would have to face consequences.

“Various parts of the Pakistan Army and the ISI were infected with cancer, he said, asserting that blaming the Army and the ISI would be to please the enemies of the country.

“If some people in the army and military are hand in glove with the Taliban then they should be dealt with. We have to eliminate the problem without forgetting the sacrifices rendered by them,” he said in a telephonic address to the MQM General Workers meeting simultaneously in 35 locations here on Friday.

He said the government has not guided the nation correctly. “Nation is being fooled that the nuclear assets are safeguarded. This national security agency should answer the nation in this regard,” Hussain demanded.

Hussain said the country was passing through the most critical juncture in its history but we were busy in frolicking and hosting dinners. He said that many people might become angry at his speech but he cared little for their anger as he valued the security and existence of the country above anything else.

He asked the people if they wanted security of the country or wanted to see the country obliterated from the face of the world. “To die is only once but if the security of the country can be safeguarded he was ready to die,” he added.

Criticising big political parties for their apathetic attitude in the aftermath of the raid by US forces in Abbottabad on May 2, he said President Zardari who was also the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, the Federal cabinet leader of all the big political parties, were supposed to guide the nation in this difficult time but the people were being fooled once again through traditional slogan mongering.

He declared that all these political elements were maintaining criminal silence and were not informing the nation about the true state of affairs. He said the rulers and even the top brass of the military would say that no harm would come to Pakistan. “They would say that Allah has created Pakistan and Allah will Himself protect it. They would continue to fool the people like they have been doing in the past. But Allah has given us hands and foot,” he added.

He has given us the brain. He told the people that if they thought that Allah has to do everything then they should continue to watch humorous talk shows on the TV.
