PPP asks PML-N to show political maturity

* Babar says Nawaz should not adopt a ‘non-serious attitude’ and mislead nation asking it to revolt against the government

ISLAMABAD: Senator Dr Babar Awan of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) said on Sunday that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) should show political maturity as the country was passing through difficult times.

Addressing a press conference along with two other stalwarts of the ruling PPP, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan and PPP Information Secretary Qamaruzaman Kaira, Babar said that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif should not adopt “a non-serious attitude and mislead the nation asking it to revolt against the government”.

Babar said that Nawaz had not mentioned that what kind of revolt he was demanding from the people. “Whether it is against parliament, constitution, democracy or law and order?” he said.

He alleged that Nawaz preferred to leave the country instead of confronting the dictator. “Why did he not announce rebellion at that time?” he asked.

He said that the PPP had always played the politics of federation and reconciliation while Nawaz, he alleged, was doing the politics of division and separation.

“At a Youm-e-Takbeer function he (Nawaz) talked about hatred and division,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif had castigated the government a day before when he targeted the government on various issues, particularly delay in the formation of an independent commission, proposed in the unanimous resolution of joint sitting of parliament in the mid of this month to probe the Abbottabad operation.

Referring to the commission, Dr Firdaus declared that the commission would be set up through a broader consultation rather than dictation from any particular party.

“An independent commission would be set up after consultations with all the political parties and stakeholders to probe the Abbottabad incident,” Firdaus said.

She said that the leader of opposition in the National Assembly had proposed some names for the commission but there were also some other signatories to parliament’s resolution. “The prime minister has started consultations with them to evolve a consensus on it,” she told newsmen.

She said that PPP believed in the politics of reconciliation and was not afraid of threatening statements, when she was asked to comment on the statements made by PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif.

Firdaus said that the government believed in the supremacy of parliament and was taking along all the political parities through its reconciliation policy.

Qamar Zaman Kaira noted that the path of confrontation adopted by PML-N was not in the interest of democracy and the country.

“The PML-N has started the politics of hate and confrontation which will damage the interests of the country,” he opined.

He vowed that the PPP would not allow any one to derail democracy. He added that PPP government was following the Charter of Democracy (CoD) in order to strengthen democracy, and President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani were promoting the politics of reconciliation in the very sprit of CoD. staff report/app
