Nawaz Sharif announces ‘Get Gilani’ drive

* Invites opposition parties, civil society to join anti-government movement

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Monday announced launch of a protest campaign against Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, and cited non-implementation of Supreme Court’s orders as the motive. The party called it a “do-or-die operation” against the government.

The PML-N chief warned that his party could also take out a ‘long march’ if the government failed to implement the apex court’s orders and the PM did not resign. Speaking at a news conference after the party’s Central Working Committee meeting, Nawaz asked Prime Minister Gilani to step down and implement the Supreme Court’s verdict or be ready to face the ire of the opposition and people of the country. “Comply with the Supreme Court’s orders. Resign from the prime minister’s office. Or get ready to face a protest movement,” Nawaz said, warning, “This is a ‘do-or-die operation’ and starts from today.”

He pledged a protest campaign inside and outside parliament against what he termed government’s attempts to ridicule the judiciary. He also urged all other opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamaat-e-Islami, JUI-F, civil society, media and the nationalist political forces of Sindh and Balochistan to join hands with his party in the anti-government drive which, he claimed, was aimed at restoring rule of law in the country and ridding it of corruption.

The PML-N supremo said his party would approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the PM and ask it to take action against him after his conviction by the apex court. Nawaz said the government had become a threat for the future of the country.
