LONDON: The World Sindhi Congress (WSC) on Tuesday held a rally on 10 Downing Street to protest against Pakistan and Sindh governments for their slow pace in probing Bashir Qureshi’s ‘murder’.
The rally was attended by a large number of Sindhi and Baloch political and human rights activists from across the United Kingdom.
WSC Chairman Hidayat Bhutto, Baloch representative Noordin Mengal, WSC Secretary-General Lakhu Luhana, Sindhi Sangat Chairman Abdul Jabbar Qureshi, Baloch Human Rights Council Secretary-General Abdul Samad Baloch, Sindhi Sangat Secretary-General Shehzado Wadhio, WSC Senior Vice Chairwoman Rubina Shaikh, Kashmir International Front Chairman Afzal Tahir, Sindhi Sangat leader Hafeezan Wadhio and WSC leader Sultan Mahar addressed the rally.
The participants shouted slogans against the alleged murder of the Sindhi nationalist leader. The speakers said that it was a great loss to Sindhi nation that a man who was emerging as a popular leader and capable of gathering Sindhi people was murdered by those who wanted to permanently enslave Sindhis.
Baloch speakers condemned Qureshi’s killing and said that the enemies of the Sindhis decided to eliminate Qureshi after Karachi’s historical freedom march on March 23.
They reiterated that the death would not go in vain but would inspire Sindhis for generations to fulfil the dream of GM Syed and Qureshi.
Showing their mistrust in Pakistani government, they urged the international community, the British premier and the UN secretary-general to press Pakistan to allow an international inquiry to probe the murder and identify, arrest and punish the culprits.
Baloch leader Noordin Mengal condemned the killing and expressed grief and solidarity with the people of Sindh. Mengal said it was a great loss to all those who stood for truth, justice and freedom. He also said that it was an attempt to suppress the voice of those who struggle for their freedom.
Mengal said further Qureshi’s killing showed the Pakistan Army’s fear and was also testimony to the fact that the Sindhis were capable of winning their freedom from Pakistan. He said that the people should follow in the footsteps of Qureshi.
He said that it was a decisive moment in the struggle of the Sindhis. Mengal said it was high time for the Sindhis to rise for their rights.
Salma Qureshi, the deceased’s sister, submitted a petition to the British premier’s office, seeking his help in this regard. pr
