PML-LM rules out merger with PML-N

By Tariq Farid

LAHORE: Amid rumours that the Pakistan Muslim League-Likeminded (PML-LM) is planning to join the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the former group has ruled out the possibility of merger with the Nawaz Sharif-led party, sources told Daily Times on Wednesday.

According to a source in the PML-LM, “there is no doubt that the party is in contact with other political parties... but it believes in maintaining its separate entity”.

“It is our party’s principled stance that it will go for a political alliance on the basis of equality because the PML-LM has proved itself an effective force inside and outside the assemblies,” said the source.

He said that the PML-LM was a strong political bloc among all the PML factions “having its network in all the four provinces... so the PML-LM does not need to merge with any other party”.

PML-LM Punjab Information Secretary Mian Asif also confirmed that there were no chances of party’s becoming part of the PML-N.

However, he said, the two parties were negotiating a seat adjustment formula for the next parliamentary elections.

“There is some development in this regard, but nothing has been finalised yet,” he said.

He denounced the PPP government for not honouring the Supreme Court’s verdict in the contempt of court case against the prime minister, and vowed to launch a protest movement.

“In case the government does not honour the SC’s judgement, the PML-LM will raise its voice against it inside and outside the National Assembly,” he said.
