Campaign against government bound to fail, says Gilani

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said the recent campaign by the opposition against the democratic government was bound to fail as they had been isolated politically and rejected by the people.

The prime minister said this in a meeting with a delegation of Sindh cabinet ministers belonging to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The delegation led by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah called on Gilani to express solidarity with him and the coalition government.

The PPP members commended the prime minister for his efforts to uphold the cause of democracy and constitution in Pakistan. Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Khuhro was also present on the occasion.

The Sindh chief minister congratulated Gilani on the adoption of a resolution by the National Assembly with overwhelming majority expressing confidence in his leadership. He said the resolution affirmed unflinching support for him as a democratically and constitutionally elected chief executive of the country.

Qaim also appreciated the leadership of the coalition partners on passage of a resolution to create a new province in southern Punjab, adding that the acceptance of long-standing demand of the region marked a historic step forward.

The cabinet members and the Sindh Assembly speaker were unanimous in their resolve to defeat the anti-democratic forces, adding that they would uphold people’s rights in all walks of life.

The prime minister thanked the Sindh chief minister, Sindh Assembly speaker and cabinet members for their unwavering support to the democratic government. He added that together they would build the edifice of democracy in the light of vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Zulifkar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

Gilani called upon the Sindh cabinet members to reach out to people at the grassroots level and mobilise them for strengthening democracy, as they were the ultimate stakeholders in the democratic polity.
