Nawaz threatens to join power protests

KHUSHAB: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif on Saturday demanded that the government end load shedding “otherwise I will join” protests against power cuts. “Over 20 hours of power outages [a day] have irked people,” he told a public rally, which had been organised as part of the PML-N’s ‘Go Gilani Go’ movement. The PML-N president said he would not sit idle until fate of the country was changed. Nawaz said that no general had the right to topple a democratic government. “A military man wasted 10 years of my life,” he said, adding that the PML-N wanted to change destiny of the country. “During our reign, India was less developed compared to Pakistan. But now circumstances have changed and Pakistan is being degraded throughout the world,” Nawaz said. He said that the government led by the PPP had given the nation corruption, power crisis, lawlessness and unemployment. He said that on one hand there were piles of problems in the country but on the other, rulers wanted to extend their tenure. Nawaz said that as prime minister, he had rejected the US offer of billions of dollars in exchange for not conducting nuclear tests. He accused President Asif Zardari’s government of transferring millions of dollars abroad. The PML-N president asked Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to allocate a Rs 1 billion package for the development of Khushab. “I request him [the chief minister] to increase this package from Rs 500 million to Rs 1 billion,” he said. Speaking on the occasion, PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said both the president and prime minister had been convicted by courts. “We are asking you to come on roads against prolonged powers outages,” he added. “The country’s top brass is making fun of common people as they are looting the country’s wealth and transferring it abroad.” He said the PML-N had nothing to do with the power and government “rather its only mission is to bring progress and prosperity to the country”. online
