PML-N inks electoral accord with PML-LM

* Both parties agree on seat adjustment formula for next general elections

* PML-LM to get 11 percent seats in NA, provincial assemblies

Staff Report

LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Likeminded (PML-LM) on Saturday inked an electoral alliance and a seat adjustment formula for upcoming elections.

A 20-member PML-LM delegation met PML-N President Nawaz Sharif at Raiwind. PML-LM General Secretary Humayun Akhtar and PML-N Secretary-General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra signed the agreement.

Akhtar told reporters 30 seats would be adjusted with PML-N under the accord. He said the leaders of both parties met in a cordial atmosphere, adding that it was admitted that a united vote bank of the Muslim League was the only hope to overcome the country’s crises. “We need to put the past behind and focus on the future and members of both parties have welcomed each other with open minds,” he said. “According to the agreement, 30 National Assembly seats (11 percent) have been allotted to the likeminded in the upcoming elections.”

He said that the same percentage of general seats have been allotted to the likeminded for all provinces. Jhagra said, “Both parties agree that the country’s conditions – whether in Karachi, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Gilgit-Baltistan – are rapidly deteriorating.”

The PML-N has sought the Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) support in anti-government movement. PML-N Chairman Zafarul Haq called on JI chief Munawar Hassan to discuss a joint movement against the Pakistan People’s Party-led government. Responding on the meeting, the JI chief said if the PML-N was serious in launching a genuine anti-government movement it should resign from assemblies first.
