Fashion icons join environmentalists to celebrate Earth Day
* Special green awards given to two individuals for helping environment through special initiatives
KARACHI: Timberland Pakistan recently celebrated the Earth Day by conducting an exciting and innovative ceremony in which five of the country’s top environmentalists were honoured along with special green awards given to two individuals who were helping the environment through special initiatives.
Some of Pakistan’s top celebrities, including morning show host Ayesha Omar, popular actress Sarwat Gillani and VJ and actress Anushey Ashraf attended the event. Sarwat wore a stunning orange and pink Ayesha outfit to the launch, while Anushey and Ayesha were dressed more causally in jeans.
The awardees included Shah Murad Aliani, country representative of the International Union of Conservation of Nature. The second award was given to Parveen Saeed of Khaana Ghar. The story of Khaana Ghar is truly heart wrenching. In 2002 Parveen, a resident of Surjani Town, heard news of a woman who had murdered her two children because she was unable to feed them, and could not bear to watch them slowly starve to death. Parveen thought that surely there is enough food in Pakistan that no one need go hungry, so she started Khaana Ghar, a small roadside eatery in Khuda Ki Basti, Karachi, where she provides a full meal (one roti and saalan) to any one who wants to eat for only Rs 3.
This third award was presented to Nargis Latif of Gulbahao Trust. Gulbahao’s tag line is: Garbage is gold – Karachi’s gift to the world. The fourth award was given to Shahid Khan of Indus Earth. The fifth award was presented to Tahir Qureshi who is senior adviser to the Coastal Ecosystem.
A dramatic incident changed the course of his life. Since then, he has been planting and rehabilitating mangrove forests and ensuring the sustainable use of resources in his country’s coastal areas. In Pakistan, Tahir is known as the ‘Father of Mangroves’. He has single-handedly changed the face of coastal areas in a country where mangroves were considered wasteland until the 1970s.
Maheen Khan, fashion designer par excellence, presented the award to Nargis Latif, while actor Shehroze Sabzwari presented the award to Tahir Qureshi. Rehana Hakim, publisher of Newsline Magazine, was also invited as a special presenter along with Nilofar Saeed of Necos cafe.
Special awards were given to Deepak Perwani for eco-friendly waste disposal and Zain Jafar of R Cube for his recycling efforts. Besides the award ceremony, the celebrations included a tree plantation ceremony and green painting activities for children.
The awards were presented by Yasin Paracha, CEO of Team A Ventures and was a sign of his commitment to preserving the environment and taking positive steps toward a greener Pakistan.
