7 Pakistani peacekeepers wounded in DR Congo: UN

UNITED NATIONS: Seven Pakistani peacekeepers serving with the UN Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) were wounded when a crowd surrounded their base in eastern part of the country on Monday and opened fire, according to UN officials and diplomats. Four other peacekeepers in the contingent were hurt by stones thrown by the 1,000-strong crowd around the base in the Bunyiakiri district of South Kivu province, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told the daily news briefing. The seven peacekeepers received bullet and were hospitalised, while the other four, who were hit by stone, were released after first-aid. Voicing “great concern” over the incident, the Pakistan mission to the United Nations immediately requested the Security Council and the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) for details of the incident, according to diplomats. They said that the Pakistani Mission has demanded information about the welfare of the wounded troops and the steps taken to prevent such attacks. The attacking crowd was apparently protesting against attacks in the region carried out by Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda rebels, Nesirky told the briefing. app
