Gilani contempt case: Two days left for appeal
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has two days left to appeal against the Supreme Court's (SC) verdict in the contempt of court case, Geo News reported Thursday.
A seven-member bench of the SC on April 26 had convicted PM Gilani in contempt of court proceedings against him for refusing to comply with an order to write a letter to the authorities in Switzerland, asking them to re-open corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
The ruling said that Gilani was guilty of contempt, but would serve a sentence only "until the rising of the court," or by the time the judges left the chamber. That happened about 30 seconds after the verdict was handed down.
The SC on May 9 released 77-page detailed verdict in the case written by Justice Nasirul Mulk. Justice Asif Saeed Khosa also added a 6-page extended note.
Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, PM Gilani's counsel met him at the Prime Minister House on Wednesday and discussed the matter related to the intra court appeal.
It is expected that the appeal would be filed today or tomorrow.
The appeal would argue that despite the opposition from the prosecutor the conviction was handed down which has no provision in the law. Also, it will raise objections on the poetry of Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.
