Govt sends Karachi, Balochistan issues to committees

ISLAMABAD: The government on Wednesday formed two committees to review law and order situation in Karachi and Balochistan. The decision came in the federal cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. Talking to reporters, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the meeting took serious notice of the situation in Balochistan and Karachi. He said the PM had formed a four-member committee to examine the law and order situation in Karachi and fix the responsibility for the incidents of violence. The committee, headed by Commerce Minister Amin Fahim, will comprise federal ministers Khursheed Shah, Naveed Qamar and Maula Bukhsh Chandio. Kaira said Law Minister Farooq H Naek would head the committee on Balochistan. The body would submit its recommendations to the cabinet after holding deliberations with the provincial government and other stakeholders. Other members of the committee are Interior Minister Rehman Malik and ministers from Balochistan. He said the government wanted to take onboard all stakeholders, including opposition, in this regard. To a question about remarks of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry about imposition of emergency in the country, Kaira said that the government was welcoming the Supreme Court’s guidelines. He, however, said the CJP had only hinted at imposition of emergency while emergency could be imposed under an executive order. He said the government was making efforts for solution of Balochistan’s problems and has been holding dialogue at different levels. He added it was a serious issue and would take time. To a question about President Asif Zardari’s participation in NATO summit, the minister said the president reiterated Pakistan’s position at the summit within the parameters of parliamentary recommendations. He said Pakistan was pressing the US for apology on Salala incident. staff report
