PM contempt case: NA speaker ruling sent to SC office

ISLAMABAD: The ruling of National Assembly Speaker, Dr. Fehmida Mirza has been sent to the Supreme Court Office.

On Thursday, Dr. Mirza had issued her five page ruling in reaction to the Supreme Court’s verdict in Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s contempt of court case. The National Assembly Speaker had ruled that in light of the Supreme Court judgment, the question of the PM’s disqualification was not raised.

“I am of the view that the charges against Yousuf Raza Gilani are not relatable to the grounds mentioned in paragraph (g) or (h) of Clause (1) of Article 63; therefore, no question of disqualification of PM Gilani from being a member (of the parliament) arises under Clause (2) of Article 63,” she said in the concluding remarks of her ruling.

The ruling came just two days prior to the expiry of the constitutional deadline of 30 days to decide whether or not the question of the premier’s disqualification arises. Fehmida Mirza had held extensive consultations with leading constitutional and legal experts on the detailed judgment of the Supreme Court in the contempt case. The speaker also rejected the reference filed by Advocate Maulvi Iqbal Haider, seeking the disqualification of PM Gilani.
