Musharraf responsible for my mother’s killing: Bilawal

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday said that former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf is responsible for the murder of his mother, a former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto.

In an interview to CNN, during his visit to Washington, Bilawal said Musharraf was aware of the threats to Benazir Bhutto and had himself threatened her in the past. The PPP chairman said Musharraf told his mother that her security was directly linked to her cooperation and relationship with him. “When Musharraf imposed emergency and it was clear that he was pulling the wool over our eyes, he was not interested in returning democracy to Pakistan and my mother started to speak out more against him, and the security was decreased,” said Bilawal.

“In fact Osama bin Laden tried five times to kill my mother Benazir Bhutto and the final attack on December 27, 2007 was successful,” he added. Bilawal said al Qaeda issued the instructions to Taliban for the actual task, to kill his mother, and Musharraf sabotaged her security when he knew about the plot. Replying to a question about Dr Shakeel Afridi, who has been sentenced to 33 years in jail for helping CIA locate al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, the PPP chairman said no country allows its citizens to cooperate with any foreign intelligence agency as it was against the law.

Bilawal acknowledged that the relations between the US and Pakistan have “deteriorated over the last year”, but said he was hopeful that the two countries will resolve their differences and work together for a common goal.

Bilawal strongly defended Islamabad’s position on war on terror issues as he told the Obama administration “it is never too late (for it) to apologise” over the loss of 24 Pakistani soldiers in a cross-border strike that has strained Pakistan-US relations. “I think an immediate (US) apology was the humane, appropriate thing to do. I’d like the American public to consider what their reaction would have been if 24 American soldiers had been killed in such a way on the border with Mexico,” he said. app
