Moderate quake jolts Pakistan
ISLAMABAD/SYDNEY: A shallow earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 struck northwest Pakistan on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake was only 10km deep and struck at 11:57am PST about 140km northeast of Sialkot, said the USGS. Powerful, shallow quakes are capable of causing extensive damage.
The Metrological Department said tremors were felt in upper parts of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.
The tremors lasted for 15 second and were felt in Muzaffarabad, Mirpur and other areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir; Islamabad; Rawalpindi; Sialkot; Faisalabad; Peshawar, Parachinar; Mohmand Agency; Shabqadar; Swat; Chiniot; Lahore and other cities and towns of upper Punjab. Following the tremors, citizens rushed to the open to save themselves. No loss of life has been reported. agencies
