KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday expressed the hope that the next phase of democratic transition, including the smooth transfer of power in accordance with the will of people as expressed by them through their vote, would be completed soon.

Zardari felicitated the nation on the holding of elections that marked democratic transition in the country. According to spokesperson to the president Senator Farhatullah Babar, the president said the holding of elections in accordance with the constitutional provisions was a triumph of the people and democracy. The president also felicitated all national institutions and the individuals who worked hard to make possible the gigantic exercise. “The people of Pakistan have spoken through the ballot,” he added.

President Zardari also contacted PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and congratulated him on his party’s victory in the general election. Zardari said that the PML-N’s victory would strengthen democracy.

He hoped that Nawaz Sharif would continue this struggle. It is pertinent to mention here that according to the election results compiled so far by the ECP, PML N is taking a clear lead on other parties in the National Assembly.

Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians President Makhdoom Amin Fahim has said the party accepts the verdict of people which they expressed through vote. The PPPP president, in a statement, said though the party had serious reservations about the fairness of polls but it had accepted the results in the larger interest of political stability, democracy and the welfare of people. Fahim said that “denial of a level-playing field to the PPPP and other democratic parties by the militants and the gerrymandering at a number of constituencies” had eroded the credibility of fair and free elections.

“The party also deplores that its protests on this count were heeded neither by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) nor by the caretaker government,” he added. Makhdoom Amin Fahim called upon the ECP to look into all the complaints the PPPP had lodged with it and redress the same in accordance with the law. “Having accepted the verdict of the people, the PPPP will continue to play a robust role in and out of parliament to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions in the country,” he said. agencies
