Zardari calls PPP ticket holders’ meeting today

By Kashif Hussain

LAHORE: President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday arrived in Lahore on a two-day visit, and is scheduled to hold an important meeting of PPP ticket holders today (Monday) to discuss the defeat in their constituencies in Punjab, sources said on Sunday.

The president is staying at his camp office in the city – Bilawal House – located in Bahria Town. The president reached here from Karachi, accompanied by former Punjab governor Makhdoom Ahmad Mehmood who has resigned from the post on ethical grounds in politics after the defeat of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the May 11 election.

They said that a meeting of PPP Punjab and Lahore chapters would also be held on the occasion.

Later, the president would also hold a meeting with the media, they said.

PPP Punjab and Lahore chapters’ office-bearers, led by Manzoor Wattoo and Samina Khalid Ghurki, respectively, would present the reports of their offices regarding the reasons of their candidates’ humiliating defeat across the province and in the capital city of Punjab, the sources said, adding that the issue of reorganisation of the party in Punjab and the issue of resignation of some key party leaders would also be discussed.

The sources said that President Zardari is going to giving a special task to former interior minister Rehman Malik in Punjab.

On Sunday, Bilawal House sources informed this scribe that soon after the arrival of President Zardari, a delegation of SAFMA (South Asia Free Media Association) held a meeting and discussed the different aspects of the May 11 election. They also informed that President Zardari would leave the city for Islamabad in the evening.

Sources from Bilawal House also confirmed to Daily Times that there was no schedule set for a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, whose party – the PML-N – has won the election and chances of such formal gathering were very thin.
