Pakistan voter turnout falls far short of expectation

ISLAMABAD: The voter turnout in general elections 2013 on National Assembly seats has been recorded at 55.02 percent against the initial projection of 63 percent. Prior to the election, it was assumed that the turnout might be as high as 80 percent.

According to the Election Commission’s data released here on Tuesday, Pakistan Muslim League (N) ranked first with 14,865,585 votes, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf secured 7,679,514 votes and stood second, while the outgoing ruling party Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians secured 6,855,027 votes and ranked third. Independent candidates bagged 5,820,757 votes in general elections and ranked fourth while Muttahida Qaumi Movement was able to bag 2,458,025 votes in general elections 2013. Pakistan Muslim League (N) secured 11,234,470 votes in Punjab, 8,566,04 votes in KPK, 593,228 in Sindh and 134,758 votes in Balochistan province. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf secured 4,925,193 votes in Punjab, 1,040,001 votes in KPK, 607,684 votes in Sindh and 24,030 votes in Balochistan. Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians secured 3,209,657 votes in Sindh assembly seats elections, 469,485 votes in KPK, 2,420,026 votes in Punjab and 51,976 votes in Balochistan.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement secured 2,510,457 votes in Sindh assembly seats elections, 7,896 votes in KPK, 54,263 votes in Punjab and 1,927 votes in Balochistan. Highest turnout was recorded at 61.96 percent in Islamabad on two national seats where 389,976 out of the total registered 626,383 people cast their ballots. Province of Punjab stood second with voter turnout at 59.62 percent, where total numbers of registered voters were 48,890,007 and total polled votes were 28,760,265 while polling on 148 national assembly seats.

Province of Sindh stood at third with a turnout at 53.82 percent, where total number of registered voters were 17,862,681 and total polled votes were 9,782,599 while polling on 61 national assembly seats and result of 57 seats have been announced. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province ranked at fourth with voter turnover at 44.83 percent. The total number of registered voters were 12,268,406 and number of polled votes were 5,476,001 while polling on 35 national assembly seats. Balochistan has ranked fifth with a voter turnout at 42.5 percent where total number of registered voters were 3,173,819 and total polled votes were 1,300,628 while polling on 14 national seats and result of 13 seats have already been announced.

Voter turnout in Federally Administered Tribal Area was recorded at 36.04 percent while polling on 12 national assembly seats. Total number of registered voters in FATA were 1,386,226 while 508,013 votes were cast.

Voter turnout during elections on all four provincial assembly seats was recorded at 55.26 percent, 58.52 percent in Punjab, 54.62 percent in Sindh, 44.74 percent in KPK and 40.86 percent in Balochistan assembly
